  • “A good memory is one trained to forget the trivial.” - Clifton Fadiman

On days like this the trivial can be something like the temperature, which is quickly forgotten when my roommate and I look back at a beautiful, sunny January day in MN where we decided to spend some much needed time outside.

  • “No, I’ll never write a word about it. What use trying? One could only string big words together, and rage at the futility of them.” - Jack London

This is true of so many experiences. Have you ever been anywhere or done anything that made you feel like this? Jack London was referring to the 1906 San Francisco fire. I’m hoping to hear about some slightly happier stories.

  • “Ô, Sunlight! The most precious gold to be found on Earth.” ― Roman Payne

Chasing the light in Minneapolis near my new sublet. It’s a bit weird and sad that January’s the new March, but I really enjoyed a chance to walk around and soak in some warmth.

  • The year was 2012.

I bought my first smartphone. Since then, I have not gone anywhere without it. Somehow for 26 years I survived without this rechargeable camera-enabled, word-sending, map-machine. I made it around the globe. Multiple times. Without it. I’d like to tell you that I’m not addicted.

But I’m not sure anymore. Is this real life? I don’t mean to but I think about that thing in my pocket all the time. What messages am I missing? What profile haven’t I updated? Did I start my step tracker? Where can I snag WiFi?

A friend recommended that I look into this challenge, to break away from my smartphone for a year. I’ve decided I want to be a part of it. It’s not about the money (it’s kind of about the money), I just want to be an inspiration to others that we don’t have to be completely dependent on our phones. In 2019 the Renaissance of unlearning ’smart’ and relearning ’the old ways’ will be my goal. Here’s a few measurable ways I would accomplish this without my spartphone: - Navigate a foreign country
- Take a long road trip with real maps
- Hold more babies
- Build more campfires
- Frolick without fear of my phone getting stolen
- Go on a date with someone I met first IRL
- Stop pissing off other movie-goers
- Wake up to the sweet sound of alarm clocks
- Write letters again, at least one

And finally, just be free. It sound simple but rarely that’s the case.

#nophoneforayear, bring it on.

  • 2018 was a heckuva year. I’d love to describe it to you all right here but there’s absolutely no way I could condense it into one small post. It was full of adventure, discovery, going abroad, coming home, and feeling home while abroad. I conquered my first mountain and became an uncle. I watched friends cross a Great Lake, and I finished my own great hike. I slept under stars and many nights in cars. I saw old friends and worked with Santa again.

The start of the new year’s calendar may just be another day to some. But for me, it’s a transformational time of closing a small chapter and starting the first paragraph in a new one. There will be many adventures to be had in 2019 and as always, I can’t wait to share them with you. Here are the Top 9 posts from 2018 in order, enjoy the throwback and see you on the other side!

  • “The big question is whether you are going to be able to say a hearty yes to your adventure.” -Joseph Campbell

The last time I took a walk, I came across this lake dotted with ice fishing holes. Having tried it once before, it occurred to me I should try again. A short walk inspired adventure, I hope to keep it in my mind and act greatly upon it!
